2019 Kia Soul Performance: Comfortable and Agile

The Kia Soul has been under production since 2009 and is manufactured by Korea-based Kia Motors. The first generation of the five-door crossover SUV lasted until 2013 and since 2014, the second generation has been in production. Sixty-six percent of the second-generation Soul’s chassis is comprised of high-strength or ultra-high-strength steel. The shock absorbers are mounted vertically to enable enhanced suspension travel.

Consumers looking to buy 2019 Kia Soul in New Jersey will be interested to know there are five trim levels available in the form of Base, Plus, Exclaim, EV and EV+, the first three of which are gas models and EV and EV+ are electric vehicles.

Easy charging for EV trims The 2019 Soul’s EV trim features a single electric motor that delivers 109 horsepower and 210 lb-ft torque with a battery composed of 30-kWh lithium-ion. With a single charge, the EV travels as much as 111 miles. When using a level 1 charger, it can take 33 hours to go from empty to full charge. With 240-volt level 2 charger, the time taken to charge is five hours and ten minutes, and with a level 3 charger, it takes just 35 minutes to achieve 80 percent of charge and 46 minutes to achieve 90 percent.

Gas engines with languid acceleration There are three engine options in the 2019 Soul with the Base trim featuring 1.6-liter I-4 delivering 118 lb-ft torque and 130 hp combined with 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. The Plus variant boasts of a 2.0-liter I-4 that features161 horsepower with 150 lb-ft torque. The Exclaim is the most powerful engine of all and has a 1.6-liter turbo delivering 195 lb-ft of torque and 201 hp with a 7-speed automatic twin-clutch transmission.

Although the Base trim’s engine is not very powerful, it does deliver languid acceleration. The turbocharged version in Exclaim meets the agility requirements. Kia Soul has a fuel economy of 24 and 30 mpg in the city and highway respectively. The economy improves with automatic transmission to 26 mpg and 31 mpg in the city and highway.
